What is most important is how your replay footage works for you after the play is over. Plus, most coaches prefer to watch a play develop from their position on the sideline rather than staring down at their iPad to see the view from the end zone. Luckily, this isn’t an issue for what really matters: replay footage (which, in the case of EDGE replay, is in very high definition). The disadvantage of the EDGE box is that Live View (live stream) footage is not in high definition. In a game that has quick pace, this may defeat the purpose of a sideline replay system completely.

This results in unnecessary delays, network stress and slow download speeds. An additional disadvantage to this system is that in the even you want to record and play back a replay of the previous play, the iPad does all the heavy lifting. In the end, this live streaming feature actually isn’t a feature at all. Instead, students or assistants are often the ones operating cameras, starting and stopping recordings to get replay footage to all other connect iPads.

It is unlikely this iPad will be the one in the coach’s hands. However, the disadvantage that comes with this is that the live stream is only available on the recorder’s (camera operator’s) iPad. The advantage of Hudl Sideline is the access to a live stream of end zone or press box camera footage on coaches’ iPads. It instead records the footage on demand before sending these recording to coaches’ iPads. The EDGE box does not live stream camera footage. iPads are connected to the wifi signal put off by this device allowing them to live stream footage.ĮDGE Replay utilizes a custom EDGE recording box. The device they’ve employed is the Teradek VidiU. Hudl Sideline relies on the use of a third-party streaming device to capture end zone camera footage and send it to an iPad on the sideline. (In an effort to keep it simple, we’ll be focused on EDGE Replay’s 2-View System and the Hudl Sideline Premium Package with a focus on end zone camera angles.) We’ll break it down into pros and cons for each system and explain which has the advantage in given categories. Today we’ll be comparing Sport Scope’s EDGE Replay system and Hudl Sideline.
